Farm to Summit has great vegetarian options and fancy looking packaging so I was looking forward to digging into this one. I ate it on a conditioning hike on the way home from work. I stopped in a park and Jetboiled up some water and let it sit in my pack while I walked.
This quickly brought up that this a two-stepper freeze-dried where you pull out the cornbread and add it at the end. I did not have the patience for that since I was on the go so I just threw the cornbread in any way. I did not hold any texture against the meal, given that I cheated on that. I’m sure the cornbread would have been much better than the mush I ended up with.
The beans were well hydrated (I waited double the time) and the meal overall seemed well formed. It was very spicy. I like some spice and it was at the high end of what I like, especially eating as fast as I do. The flavor beyond the chili spice was very one note and this probably contributed to it seeming even spicier. I imagine some people like their chili to just be beans and chili spice, but I found it pretty boring.
Would you eat again: No. Not my favorite chili recipe.
